Identity Abroad Matters

The joy and life-long impact that a study abroad program can have on an individual is an experience that should be accessible to all regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, gender, disability, economic background etc.

Global Seminar

Since 2008, UCSD has offered a special study abroad option, UC San Diego Global Seminars, which are 5-week summer programs (2 courses = 8 units) taught by UCSD faculty in different countries around the world.

UC San Diego offers several ways for students to study abroad: Education Abroad Program (EAP), Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP), and the Global Seminars. Students may study abroad while earning academic credit.

Course Completion Abroad

To have your course considered for credit by the Black Diaspora and African American Studies Program, please ensure the following guidelines are met. If you have any questions, concerns, or need help with course selection, don’t hesitate to consult with an BDAAS advisor.

Courses must be pre-approved by the BDAAS Advisor - this initial review does not guarantee course credit.
- Students should schedule an advising session to obtain pre-approval for abroad courses if they have any questions about their study abroad coursework.
- Completed Academic Planning Forms (APF's) should be sent to bdaas@ucsd.edu for review
Please adhere to the following guidelines for study abroad coursework:
- Courses must be UC transferable
- Courses must be upper-division (course numbered 100-199)
- Courses must be taken for a letter grade of C- or better
- Courses must transfer as at least 4 units

To receive course credit:

Major/Minor
- To apply towards major or minor upper-division elective requirements, the course content must be focused at least 50% on the Black experience. All petitions are subjected to BDAAS Program Director review.

After completion of the study abroad courses:

Students must submit a formal course petition along with supporting materials of course syllabus, course work, class notes, and assignments. Instructions on How to Petition Courses.
- Petitions will be processed once study abroad coursework is correctly listed on a student's degree audit.
Petitions will then be evaluated by the BDAAS Director.
